Price-reporting agencies (PRAs) are publishers that report on and bring transparency to the physical commodity markets. My primary role is to find out all major geopolitical and trade-related news happening around the world that could have an impact on oil prices.
I need to cover the crude oil industry in the Asia and the Middle East region by writing reports, news articles and other stories of relevance to crude oil and track trade level of crude cargoes in this region. I also have to track the prices of crude oil future contracts traded on an exchange on a day-to-day basis and explain with relevant news and facts as to why the price went up or went down. All this while constantly engaging with various industry stakeholders (oil producer, buyer, traders, etc.) to discuss the pricing fluctuations of different crude grades on a regular basis. Asian economies growing strongly, increase in usage of electric cars, increasing subsidies for green technology, rise in shale gas extraction in the West - all these factors make this industry extremely exciting.
Besides, I also do forward pricing of commodities.
My interest and passion lie in economics, and I did my Masters in Applied Economics, a field that applies to economic theories and principles to real-world situations with the desired aim of predicting potential outcomes. Singapore is the bunkering hub in the world. The bunker is the fuel used in ships - think of it as the biggest petrol station in the world. Hence almost all the trade that happens between the west and the east "stops through" Singapore, making it a very influential and buoyant market with a lot of growth opportunities.
For most of you, this may be a new profession and one that you haven't considered thus far - that's perfectly fine. But in case you are wondering whether this is a career for me, ask yourself the following questions:
1. Do I have a flair for writing? You need to write a lot - you need to be able to concisely put in words price complexities into something the common man can understand.
2. Am I comfortable talking to strangers? You should be able to pick up the phone and hold a conversation with total strangers to exchange information.
3. Am I confident with my presentation skills? You should present a confident self at every possible instance with no doubt in your abilities.
